Life is a dream for the wise, a game for the fool, a comedy for the rich, a tragedy for the poor.
Good morning friends, here we go with another week. Whilst I am happy with the great progress the administration is making, I have to tell you I am worried, I am really worried. The issue of voter rights is becoming the single most important issue in US politics. There is now an open race by Republican states to suppress voting opportunities for anyone who they think will vote Democrat. They have not embarked upon this course of action without careful planning and they are even saying it out loud at the Supreme Court.
A lawyer for the Arizona Republican Party admitted it out loud in the highest court in the land. In a hearing focused on a pair of Arizona voting restrictions enacted five years ago, It was made a crime for anyone other than a family member or caregiver to turn in another person’s early ballot. In addition, it required any ballot cast in the wrong precinct to be discarded, even if the person was eligible to vote. Both of these requirements were struck down last year by the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, citing a disproportionate impact on minority voters. Attorney General Mark Brnovich appealed.
In the hearing before SCOTUS, Amy Coney Barrett asked why the Arizona Republican Party was involved in trying to reinstate the law. She asked,
“What’s the interest of the Arizona RNC in keeping, say, the out-of-precinct ballot disqualification rules on the books?" Now brace yourself for the lawyer's remarkably honest response. Michael Carvin, representing the Arizona Republican Party said, “Because it puts us at a competitive disadvantage relative to Democrats. Politics is a zero-sum game. And every extra vote they get through unlawful interpretation of Section 2 (of the Voting Rights Act) hurts us. It’s the difference between winning an election 50-49 and losing an election 51 to 50.”
There you have it my friends, with remarkable candour, the lawyer said it out loud. Dear Supreme Court, we can't win unless we cheat, please help us. Whilst Arizona is leading the charge, this is going down across the country, no more so in Georgia. I'm not going to waste time discussing each, because it is well documented. If this were happening anywhere else on earth, the US would be condemning it. There is frankly a cancer at the heart of state government. 250 bills in 43 states across the country, are a blatant attempt to stop minority communities from voting. There is no description for this other than institutional RACISM. The claim is that these laws are being enacted to protect election integrity. However, numerous investigations by non partisan bodies, show beyond doubt, there IS NO SUBSTANTIVE VOTER FRAUD, IT DOES NOT EXIST. Of course you will find examples, but all evidence shows, it happens in very small numbers and each party is equally guilty.
23 States have a Republican trifecta where all arms of the legislature are controlled by the State GOP. In these states, these repressive racist laws are likely to pass, taking those states back to the 1050s on steroids. As Stacey Abrams said it is a
"Redux of Jim Crow in a suit and tie".
If federal laws are not passed to cancel this racist legislation, the Dems are in real danger of losing control at least of the Senate, if not both houses. PLEASE people wake up to this, it is a clear and present danger to US democracy.
